For those of us in the northern hemisphere, things are starting to get green again.  Sure, we start to see green in April, but May is really when things start to grow and sprout.   I try to see lessons and reminders in the cycle of nature… and spring teaches us about something that is called “growth mindset” in more academic circles.

So when I teach growth mindset, I tend to break it down to one simple word.  Yet.

Yup… yet.

Let’s put it in yoga pose terms.

Instead of saying “I can’t do crow pose” I say “I can’t do crow pose yet”.

Now, the truth is, my relationship with crow pose is complicated, and I might never be able to do a version of crow that looks like folx expect it to – but what I don’t do is limit myself to the belief that I CAN’T do crow.  Instead, I leave room for myself to grow into crow pose with that one simple word – yet.

That is what spring teaches us.  If trees and grass and flowers believed they couldn’t grow because of winter – what would happen?   Instead, they know that they are in a resting part of their natural cycle and they will grow.

So how do you bring growth mindset into your life?  Believe in “yet”.

I haven’t found the right job yet.

I haven’t figured out the solution to this problem yet.

I can’t cook tofu properly yet.

This doesn’t make sense yet.

I can’t do wheel pose yet.

There are so many ways you can bring growth mindset into your life.  It simply comes down to the idea of not limiting yourself with your own beliefs.   Understand that you always have room to grow as a person.  You can grow your skills, your understanding and your relationships by choosing to embrace “yet”.

With love, gratitude and the power of yet,

Cara
